PTF UK41965 for Rational COBOL Runtime for z/OS causes a problem on remote calls

The EGL team just discovered that applying just the 7.1.0.2 PTF UK41965 without the 7.5.1 PTF UK42080 causes the following problem running EGL generated COBOL programs:

Message ELAD ---> UCILCPMI0000324CELAD12/16/0812:59:58ENUELA00002P IBM
Rational COBOL Runtime is required for program ELACSV7

ELACSV7 is used when calls from remote clients are made to a CICS system (remote clients include jsfHandlers, the EGL Debugger, web transactions, etc)


The 7.5.1 PTF (UK42080) will need to be applied to resolve this and the 7.5.1 PTF is compatible with earlier versions of the RBD client (ie. RBD 7.1.0.x).

.....but, you can not update to 7.5.1 from 7.1.x, you have to uninstall 7.1.x and then install 7.5 to update to 7.5.1
Our COBOLGen programmers are working on 7.1.0.1 which we consider it a rather stable release.
We are not willing at the moment to switch to the 7.5 platform.

So If I understand correctly, since we will not for the time being switch to 7.5 we should not update 7.1.0.1 to 7.1.0.2 cause we'll get the the remote call error? If that is the case, I believe that an interim fix for 7.1.0.2 should be released.

Hi,

As far as I understand Mark is saying that the 7.5 host runtime is backward compatible. We are using here 7.1.02 for development and have just installed the mentioned PTF for 7.5 with no problems.

Alexander is correct. The COBOL runtime is compatible with both RBD 7.1.x and 7.5.x. The problem is that the host PTF that was shipped for 7.1.0.2 (PTF UK41965) has an error, which happens to be corrected by the 7.5.1 PTF (UK42080). Everyone should install the 7.5.1 PTF, regardless of whether they are using RBD 7.1.x or 7.5.x.

People who are on RBD 7.1.0.1 should not hesitate to move up to 7.1.0.2. It contains lots of fixes, several significant performance improvements for COBOL applications, and several enhancements, especially for batch generation.
