Hi all - and sorry about this, but in less than a week we ended up with three times the number of attendees we can teach remotely in December, 2009. We'll be offering additional installments of this education in 2010. And we'll be updating the Cafe' with announcements as soon as things are under control. :-)

RDz Distance Learning 2009

Learn how to use RDz to develop, maintain, support, test and deploy z/OS traditional applications and create Web Services using IBM's Rational Developer for System z.

Audience
COBOL and PL/I programmers who seek to learn how to use Rational Developer for reducing mainframe MIPS while doing traditional z/OS application maintenance, support and code development, and doing enterprise modernization and SOA projects. Note that the workshops are in COBOL.

Duration
5 days total. 2 hours of e-conference time per day plus 3 - 5 additional hours of lab and workshop time per day.

Note: All workshops are in English only (unless otherwise noted in the announcement).

These instructor-led, free workshops provide an opportunity for you to learn RDz through e-conference-led presentations, and extensive hands-on labs. Each day, the instructor will present two separate Web seminars to demonstrate techniques that include how to use the Eclipse workbench, Rational Developer for System z tooling (a deep-dive into the IDE, workbench features, Problem Determination Tool interfaces, processes best practices and, and test data management topics.

After the Web seminars, you will be given exercises that include the topics of that day to complete. Class times and contact information are listed when you select a location and register for a session.

The workshops and hands-on lab exercises associated with the daily Web seminars will take between 2 to 4 hours a day to complete. An instructor will be available for questions. After completing the workshops, you will be ready to use the RDz tooling (Rational Developer for System z) to develop, maintain and support your z/OS applciations.

Prerequisites

  • At least two years of production COBOL or PL/I project work. A working knowledge of SQL, computer skills, and an understanding of z/OS technologies is assumed.

Agenda

  • The Eclipse IDE
    • Using the Rational Developer for System z workench
  • Introduction and deep-dive into the IDE (workbench):
    • Setting up projects
    • Editing code
    • Debugging code
    • Using RDz for maintenance and support
  • Accessing Remote Systems from RDz
    • Data management (file allocation, etc.)
    • Remote and local compilation
  • File search:
    • Locally
    • On the host
  • Creating MVS Subprojects
  • Debugging z/OS applications
  • Using the z/OS File Manager to maintain test data in complex file structures
  • BMS MAP editing and MFS 3270 green-screen painting
  • Using the Data Explorer, to maintain code in relational tables, and test embedded SQL statements
  • Using RDz's Web Services technology and functionaliy to create and test SOA applications

Start Times
There are two one hour lecture sessions each day. One at 8:00 AM Eastern ("New York") Time, and the second at 11:00 AM Eastern Time.
