Overview:
ValueSource has one of the largest footprints of EGL developers in India or even in the world. We have been supplying EGL-services to KBC-bank for several years now. KBC is one of the pioneers worldwide in large scale use of EGL as a strategic development tool. As a consequence, ValueSource has a deep know-how of all aspects of EGL, both for COBOL and for JAVA, as well as of its relation with other products such as ClearCase®.
ValueSource provides offshore services in Enterprise Modernization with EGL as the target language. Our offer more in particular concerns
- Testing of migrated code in code migration projects
- Creation of missing testware and documentation for such projects
- Refactoring and modernizing the user interface (e.g. to EGL RUI)
- Refactoring and disentangling the code in order to generate web-services
ValueSource has a very close and trusted relationship with IBM and the developers of the EGL tooling in the IBM labs. Moreover, we have formed strategic partnerships with several tool vendors in order to establish a Code Migration Factory at ValueSource, more in particular for code migrations starting from RPG, VAGen and CSP, Informix 4GL, Cool:Gen, CA Ideal and COBOL, with EGL as target. Other migration tracks are being investigated.
Why migrate to EGL?
Need a better UI or web services?
The ‘green screen' is no longer in line with your image. You need to make or use web-services. Ad hoc solutions make your application even harder to maintain. A move to EGL gets you on track again.
Consolidate in order to simplify
Your legacy shows the history of IT and of mergers and acquisitions. You are stuck with skill silos, with some skills becoming dangerously hard to find.
Platform independence
EGL integrates well in the Systems-z and -i environments and in Open Systems. You can generate COBOL or JAVA, so EGL gives realistic platform independence. Use it to consolidate and reduce costs, or to bring a software package to market on different platforms and increase market share.
Optimize workload and save money
If you want to remain on System-z, you can sharply reduce cost by using IBM's powerful zAAP (co)processors and their cheaper software licensing scheme.
EGL builds the bridge
EGL offers the bridge between past and modern environments. EGL is a modern computer language, with a focus on clarity, productivity and ease of use. It works perfectly well in modern IT-environments, yet legacy procedural developers have no problems using EGL. EGL in fact hides the complexity of modern architectures and allows your developers to focus on the business logic instead of on the technology.
EGL can compete in productivity and ease of use with any of the object oriented languages and their development platforms. But EGL really excels by offering legacy developers access to this modern environment. You can train your COBOL developer to EGL and make them write fully Web 2.0 and SOA compliant applications in just a couple of weeks. Because of the familiar Eclipse environment, young developers can again work together with the developers who know your business.
It is not just your developers. As a procedural language, EGL is the target of choice for code migration tool vendors. The move from procedural to EGL is far easier than the move to object oriented. In addition, the code can be maintained by the people currently doing the job. A large set of code migration tools with EGL as a target is available, both for IBM legacy (VAG, CSP, RPG, Informix 4-GL, CICS COBOL) as for a number of 4-GL environments (Natural, Cool:Gen, HPS, CA-Ideal etc) and different flavors of COBOL.
With EGL, you end up pretty much where a complete rewrite of code can bring you: access to modern technology such as web services, a modern user interface, platform independence. But the cost and the risks are far lower, and you can once more team up older and young staff.
