Ditto:
I'm a left coast attendee for the May session. 5:00am (PST) is quite early.
Also not clear on whether I need to have RBD installed for the lab portions, or will an environment be provided?
You need RBD 7.5.1 or above installed on your own machine.
I have no issue with delaying the start of the sessions, but can anyone direct me to the standard (or delayed) timing then for these sessions for people located at GMT ?
Ditto here, too. Three of us will be attending from the West Coast for the June session, so if there's any way to delay to 9am EST, that would be much appreciated!
Okay you EGL hard chargers, I have sent out the schedule and Course set up instructions for the May 4th session. The schedule will be as follows:
There are actually two classes you will be taking:
1. EGL Foundation Training - which runs from May 4th --> May 8th,
There is a one week break in between to give everyone a chance to get caught up with the lab exercises and then,
2. EGL/RUI Web 2.0 Development - which runs from May 18th --> May 22nd
The intended agenda is as follows (this is subject to change based on a number of circumstances)
EGL Foundation Training
Day 1 - Introduction to Eclipse, EGL Overview, Workbench Navigation, EGL file types, EGL development lifecycle, Creating a simple project,
Database Import and customization
Day 2 - The EGL Programming Model, DataTypes, DataItems, Records, Arrays, Conditional and Sequenc logic, The EGL Debugger
Day 3 - The EGL Built-in Functions, Date and Time Handling, Error and Exception Handling
Day 4 - EGL and SQL (Relational) database access - "A to Z", EGL and non-relational file handling, EGL Build Files, Best Practices for Testing
Day 5 - EGL and Services (SOA), EGL COBOL Generation, Calling Java, COBOL and RPG
EGL/RUI Web Development
Day 1 - EGL Rich User Interface programming
Day 2 - Properties and Event Handling
Day 3 - Cascading Stylesheet,
Day 4 - Drag and Drop, Grid Widgets, Services
Day 5 - InfoBus - and calling RUIHandlers and Widgets, Deployment
How does that look?
Hi Dennis. I will be teaching the June class and I am located on the West Coast. I have struggled with when to start the class each day to accomodate everyone. We have enrollees from the middle east, India, Denmark, Spain, and also all across the US. For now we will start at 8:00a Pacific time for the first lecture each day and 11:00a Pacific time for the second one. If there is an issue we may have to look at recording each session. Thanks for enrolling in the June session. Take care, Mike.
Having worked on Intl projects I can certainly understand your dilemma. The Pacific start times are still much better than the Eastern. The Eastern time had me either starting my commute earlier or taking the class at home and coming in late. This gives me a much better chance of success. Thank you
Hi Michael. The confirmation mail I got still spoke of Eastern Time. Can you confirm that indeed these timings have been delayed ? And does this also count for the courses scheduled in May ?
Thanks.
Hi. I had sent out an email with the Agenda, Times, Setup instructions, etc. to everyone enrolled so far in the May 4th session. The intention was for this to be the confirmation document and it should supercede anything already sent... Depending on where everyone that signs up for the June session, I may adjust the starting times for those classes. However, being a "left coaster", starting the class at 5 or 6am in the morning is daunting and I am not sure you want me to be teaching a class THAT early...
Take care.
Michael,
I signed up on 4/28 and never received any information about the 800 number.

Why is there only "Part 2" sessions listed for the month of July? If I'm already using EGL but, want to learn Rich UI can you skip Part 1?
Hi. That is actually the reason for the session in July. For those that know EGL, we are having just the session on RUI. You can also skip the first session in June if you want to do the RUI Session sooner.
Thanks for the explanation.
Has a final decision been made yet on the session times for the June sessions? I'd just like to update my calendar.
Hey Max. Good timing! It just so happens I will be sending the email announcement out later today to those on the enrollment list. FYI for anyone else interested the times will be (starting on June 15th): First lecture is 8:00a - 9:00a PACIFIC time and Second lecture is 11:00a to Noon PACIFIC time. Hopefully this will work for you. Take care, Mike.
It's great that these classes are FREE! And there's no travel involved. Learn EGL while wearing your fuzzy slippers. Thanks Michael!
Are the "3 - 5 additional hours of lab and workshop time per day" between the 2 sessions, or after the 2nd?
I'm located in Belgium (GMT+1), which places the sessions at 5PM and 8PM.
Thanks, Peter.
Hi Peter.
I understand how this would impact your evening. I am usually brain dead by 9:00p my self. The course is very flexible. I will talk for an hour each session with the two hour break in between to give you a chance to do the workshops, ask questions via email, and so on. If after the second session you want to stop for the day that is up to you. You will have the whole next day to continue with the labs, send emails with questiosn, etc.
Take care, Mike.
Thanks for the info. I'll ask my boss if there's some kind of compensation in it for me
I am booked on the September course. I am a bit concerned about the 800 audio conference phone numbers. Apart from the obvious comment that having 800 phone numbers is rather excessive for anyone, I assume an 800 phone number is what we refer to as an 0800 number which is free from a landline. How is this going to work in the UK where I am? It is important, because a free number means that I can do this at home. Is it compulsory to use a phone?
Best wishes, Margaret
Hi Margaret.
We, through IBM, have a contract with Premiere Global Services. With this comes a limited number of local and toll free numbers Worldwide that you can dial into. From the UK if you are close enough you can use the local numbers or the toll free number from the following list:
UK, Birmingham
+44 (0) 121 270 0680
UK, Leeds
+44 (0) 113 322 0980
UK, Liverpool
+44 (0) 151 203 0950
UK, London
+44 (0) 20 7078 9170
UK, Manchester
+44 (0) 161 241 9820
Hi Mike
I have the same question like margaret. Is this service available in switzerland too?
Best regards
Karl
Hi Karl.
Yes. We are able to provide both a Toll Free number for Switzerland and local numbers if you live in or near Zurich or Geneva.
International toll free (Switzerland) 0 800 835 470
Local (Switzerland, Geneva) +41 (0) 22 555 0224
Local (Switzerland, Zurich) +41 (0) 44 556 8450
Note: There is a slight chance these may change between now and the next DL Class. I will send a list of valid numbers to all those enrolled several days before the class starts.
One other comment to everyone regarding this. Even if we are not able to provide a toll free number for your specific location, you are still welcome to call the closest LOCAL number to your location.
Hope to see you (Virtually) soon. Take care,
Mike.
I just registered for the Nov. 30 session, and the confirmation email states ET (New York time).
Which timezone is the online part in? New York or California?
This is a 3 hour difference.
If CA, then the sessions would be at 5PM and 8PM (OK for me because I'll follow the course from home), but if NY then it would be 2PM and 5PM (not OK because I have to work during the day).
As I said before, I'm from Belgium in the GMT+1 timezone.
Also: are there local or toll-free numbers from Belgium? Or could I use Skype to dial in?
Will the free IDE be available by then, and can we use it? Or should I download the trial and install it just before the course starts? If so, which version of the WAS do I need?
Thanks,
Peter
Hi,
September is fast approaching and so is the EGL course. I have worked out that I will need Rational Developer 7.5.1 installed on my PC. But what are the requirements for our iSeries - will I need something installed and running? This will take time to organise as we may need to install PTFs etc.
Also - just what is the free community edition coming this summer that is announce on the EGL Cafe front page?
Best wishes
Margaret
Hi Peter.
Sorry about the confusion on the times. I thought we had fixed that. The timezone for the online part is Pacific (California) timezone.
We do have (luckily) a toll-free number for Belgium:
International toll free (Belgium) 0 800 77 243
Hopefully this schedule and number will work for you. As for the IDE we will be using RBD. I will be sending out setup instructions to all those enrolled later this week. We will be using RBD v7.5.1.4 and Tomcat 5.5.23 as the Web Application Server. You can use WAS also if you like. I would recommend WAS v6.1.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Take care,
Mike.
Hi Margaret.
Don't you know it!! For the course you won't need anything for the iSeries. When you are using RBD for ACTUAL development on the iSeries, I would suggest RDi SOA for the iSeries. The course uses RBD to teach EGL basics and RUI, all of this functionality is available in RDi SOA as well. I will be sending out the course setup instructions to everyone enrolled for the September 14th course later this week.
As for the EGL CE SDK, about to be released, this is a "light" version of the EGL tools that allows you to do EGL RUI development, but does not include much of the features RBD, RDi SOA, and RDz have. Much like Eclipse is a lighter much more basic version of RAD.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Take care,
Mike.
Thanks for the info!
Just one more question.
Do I need to use an actual phone for calling the toll-free number, or could I use SKYPE?
Thanks,
Peter
Hi Peter.
As far as I know, SKYPE will work.
Also, were you asking about whether to install Tomcat on your pc or another computer? For the class I would recommend it be on your pc. The reason being that the deployment time will be shorter which is the whole purpose for using Tomcat. We want you to be learning EGL and not having to spend more time than neccessary deploying and testing.
Take care,
Mike.
Hi Mike,
I'll keep your remark about Tomcat in mind.
Today I got a mail announcing the EGL Community Edition (the free version).
Could I use this for the course, or will I need some additional things that only exist in the RDB version?
Thanks,
Peter
Hey Peter.
We have to use the RBD version for the course, sorry. All of our screen shots and workshops are based on RBD...
IBM CE is AWESOME though! I am working on the courseware using it but will not have it ready in time. I encourage everyone to check it out. You can have both on your machine.
See you (virtually) Monday. Take care,
Mike.
Dear Michael,
At last I have installed RBD on my PC - and also on my colleage's. This was the easy part and only took the best part of a morning. However, I found downloading the IBM software incredibly frustrating. Just downloading the download manager took nearly an hour! For future courses, would it be possible for attendees to opt for a DVD with the software instead of downloading?
Looking forward to the course on Monday,
Margaret
Hi Michael,
I'm getting the following in the console:
Using the Setup Guide for the RUI EGL Distance Learning Course
EGL0505E Cannot connect to jdbc/EGLDerbyR7: Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory (Failed to start database 'C:\databases\EGLDerbyR7', see the next exception for details.)
EGL0002I The error occurred in allcustomers processing the onConstruction function.

Alex
Alex,
Saw your note in my email and here. Thought it would be better to answer here so others may follow.
Two items to check.
1. Is the Derby.jar in the commons\lib folder of Tomcat?
2. Is the database in the C:\databases\EGLDerbyR7 folder?
(sometimes people mistakenly create a C:\databases\EGLDerbyR7\EGLDerbyR7 database...) Make sure it is this exactly.
Let me know.
Mike.
Mike,
Yes, derby.jar is in tomcat's common/lib.
Derby was unzipped to c:/databases/EGLDerbyR7
and has the following files/folders,
log
seg0
service.properties
On the IDE, I can connect to EGLDerbyR7, and query the tables.
Also,

Source code line # 345 in allcustomers.java has variable '$truncation' and seems to be an issue, see above.
The November-December weeks fall in the midst of one our busiest times of the year. Are there any plans or dates scheduled yet for 2010?
Hi Bob.
We have not discussed yet the DL plans for 2010. I am pushing to have the November 30th Distance Learning sessions be recorded in order to reach a larger audience. We'll put an announcement here on the Cafe as soon as we can. Thank you for asking!
Mike.

I've signed up for the June class but I have a request. Would it be possible to delay the start of one of these sessions till 9am ET? Even an 8:30 ET start would be an improvement. I'm attending in Central time and it's an awkward start time. I can't even imagine being a west coaster and try to attend these morning sessions.
