Welcome to the RTCi Hub

Welcome to the IBM Rational Team Concert for i hub; a place to learn about RTCi and collaborate with the developers of RTCi and the community at large. Rational Team Concert for i can make you and your team more productive while developing new RPG applications and maintaining the old ones. At the heart of it, Rational Team Concert for i is a Software Configuration Management (SCM) system. But as you explore and participate in this hub, you will quickly realize it's not just any ordinary SCM system!

RTCi includes so many great features that it's hard to know where to even start in a small overview like this. There are work items that can be used to track new requirements, defects, or any other type of task. Screen shots and other files can be attached to a work item and discussions around a work item are captured in the work item, not email, so they don't get lost! There is a state of the art source change management system that tracks every change to every line of source over the life of the application, with tools to view the change history and compare any revisions of a source member. All changes are tracked as change sets that are linked to the work item, allowing anyone to see exactly which source lines were modified to implement the work item.

Development processes are usually defined with good intentions, but their implementation can quickly become a burden. The notion of a team and process underscores everything in RTCi. With RTCi you can tell the tool what your processes are, and the tool makes following those processes easy and productive!

With any new product, especially one as innovative as RTCi, there are bound to be lots of questions. The RTCi discussion forum will be a great place to ask these questions and participate in discussions around RTCi and change management practices on IBM i. In early 2008, the RDi and RTCi development teams switched from using an older internal IBM change management system to using RTCi. So we are excited about using the RTCi blog as a place where we can share experiences, hints, and tips from both a user and developer's perspective.

Rational Team Concert for i extends Rational Team Concert with additional capabilities to run on IBM i and to manage native IBM i source code like RPG. Rational Team Concert is built on the Jazz team collaboration platform. It's often said that Jazz is to the team what Eclipse is to the developer. While RDi provides modern application development tools to make RPG developers more productive, RTCi provides modern SCM and team collaboration tools to make the entire RPG development team more productive. Together they are a fantastic combination!
