We are pleased to announce the IBM Rational C/C++ and COBOL Development Tools for AIX Managed Beta Program.

The Managed Beta program will engage users that are interested in deploying Rational C/C++ and COBOL development tools for AIX to evaluate code and provide feedback on their experiences. Participants will join developers and product management for discussions and have access to a private website. The website will include a tool for reporting problems and feature requests. This program is now open for sponsors to submit nominations for their customers/partners. More information

IBM is pleased to announce that IBM COBOL for AIX, V3.1 has been certified by Oracle. This collaborative effort with Oracle provides IBM COBOL for AIX customers assurance that they are able to write applications which interact with Oracle's database while leveraging IBM's leadership in compilation technology.

Oracle customers with an active support contact with Oracle can access Oracle's list of certified compilers via Oracle Metalink document number 43208.1.

IBM COBOL for AIX users should download and apply the 3.1.0.3 PTF from the IBM Fix Central web site. This PTF contains additional support to facilitate using the IBM COBOL for AIX, V3.1 compiler with Oracle's database.

This is the place to come if you want to hear about the various new clauses, phrases, and statements in the latest COBOL Standards.

Additions to the various IBM COBOL products come from a variety of sources; customer requests, additions to support IBM Hardware, and of course additions based on the COBOL Standards.

In this Blog I'll point out which new features in an IBM COBOL product owe its life to the COBOL Standard.

Before we go any further, i'll say a word or two about myself. I've been developing Compilers and related tools for over 20 years. During that time I have worked on Compilers for Basic, COBOL, Fortran, and PL/1. I have a background in IBM Midrange including the System/36, System/38, AS/400, and iSeries. I have been part of a team that wrote a COBOL compiler from scratch, and have been active in various Language Standards for over 10 years.

I am currently a member of INCITS/PL22.4, COBOL Task Group, and am also a member of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) Programming languages Group (*CAC/JTC1/SC22*).

My current job involves working with the various COBOL Standard organizations; including the development of the latest 20xx COBOL Standard, as well as the development of COBOL for AIX.

Which brings us to the latest release of COBOL for AIX, version 3.1. This version of COBOL was released early this year. It includes many things, including 64 bit support. But for the moment I wanted to talk about the new NATIONAL data types.

The 2002 COBOL standard included content for Internationalization and Localization. The existing USAGE clause now allows the NATIONAL keyword. Although it is not necessary that NATIONAL be implemented as a Unicode type, in COBOL for AIX, NATIONAL is Unicode UTF-16.

Welcome RDz users! in RDz Team Blog

Posted by RDz_Dave Apr 15, 2009

Rational Developer for System z (RDz) is the premier development environment for COBOL, CICS, IMS, and System z in general. RDz provides specialized editors, code generators, analysis tools, testing tools, debuggers, and more for the COBOL developer in a environment that is easy to use and productive. RDz also allows you to take COBOL code you have today and turn it into an Enterprise or RESTful service without any code changes!

This is where we are going to be talking about new ideas that we have for tools coming from the IBM lab; the kinds of problems that RDz can help solve; questions we are hearing from our customers; as well as quick tips and tricks we have for using various RDz tools.

Hope that you take a look at RDz and keep your eye out for more posts.

Welcome to the COBOL Development Team Blog!

This is the place where members of the COBOL Development team will discuss ways to use COBOL, share tips and shortcuts, ongoing work involving COBOL, and sometimes even provide an early look at new features and functions we are thinking about for the future.

A quick introduction to me! I am Captain COBOL...at least according to IBM SCLM developer Liam Doherty :-) I got promoted from MR. COBOL at the last SHARE. (http://www.share.org)

I have over 20 years experience in development of IBM COBOL compilers and run-time libraries using PL/X, assembler, C, and COBOL and am a regular presenter at SHARE conferences. I can be 'seen' often on IBMMAIN (http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html) responding to questions and correcting information about COBOL products and directions for COBOL on IBM mainframes.

I am a mainframe bigot, I like to say "If you can pick it up, it is NOT a computer". According to me, and many others, the world runs on IBM z/OS and COBOL. Most of my work has been on IBM mainframe COBOL products, though I can code in C and work with Windows and AIX.

This BLOG may cover any and all topics IBM COBOL, z/OS, I-series, AIX, and Windows/RDz. Since most COBOL is written and running on z/OS, we may slant in that direction :-)

I hope you enjoy this blog! Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas about COBOL with the community via comments to BLOGs.
