Hi, Paul. The answer is maximum ease: You can install 7.5.1.4 on the 7.5.1 product, regardless of whether you installed another fix pack and regardless of which fix packs you installed.

Hi Brian,

This is a very nice piece of work, and it helps me understand Delegates better. I am having some trouble, though, and it sounds very much like what Nikola is experiencing: the list appears far away from the text field - not directly underneath as in your sample. I have created an example which shows this behavior, however I don't see how to upload my sample to your blog post. Is there a way I can send it to you?

Thanks much,
Hi Lisa,
We install often the product from scratch. What is your recommendation for installing RBD and it's fixpacks ? When reading the Installation notes :
If IBM Rational Business Developer, Version 7.5.1, 7.5.1.1, 7.5.1.2, or 7.5.1.3 is not installed on your system or if you are installing an additional instance, you can install this update when you install Rational Business Developer, Version 7.5.1, 7.5.1.1, 7.5.1.2, or 7.5.1.3. For details, see Installing Rational Business Developer, Version 7.5.1.4.

It still seems UNCLEAR to me if you have to install ALWAYS all the fixes or if the Base Product with the latest fix is enough ?
The problem why it is unclear to me is the last "or" between the versions in the last statement of the installation notes.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Hi LIsa
We are planning to use 7.5.1.4 fix for RDB, but download location confused us.

On IBM page:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3456&context=SSMQ79&context=SSSTY3&context=SSDV2W&q1=7.5.1.4+download&uid=swg24024648&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en

we can download :
Download RELEASE DATE LANGUAGE SIZE(Bytes) Download Options
egl7514.update.disk1.zip	06-Nov-09	English	10	FTP
egl7514.update.disk2.zip	06-Nov-09	English	10	FTP
egl7514.update.disk3.zip	06-Nov-09	English	10	FTP

ONLY disk1, disk2 & disk3.

Also on link provided under that page:
http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/v75/rbd/7514/zips/

we can download disk 1-5.

Installation (upgrade procedure with IM) doesn't work with disk 1-3 (asking for disk 4 & 5), but works with all disks 1-5.
What the catch with provided disk 1-3 download on main page.

Is installation with disks 1-5 OK. We have finished that kind of inst. on our testing machine. Everything went OK.

Hi,

What you plan to do should work. Provided you'll reload r12 with the initial 64-bit token returned from __cinit before you invoke malloc, free, __cterm, etc. I suppose you already knew how to do that from the example in Chapter 3 in Metal C Programming Guide and Reference. Mixing LE programs and Metal C programs requires your understanding on the difference in environmental requirements. R12 is one in particular that LE side of the program depends on.

You can build such code in JCL with the proper options, e.g. Metal, GENASM, LP64, etc. The only requirement is that you compile 31-bit and 64-bit Metal code in separate steps.

If you are looking for larger virtual storage for your data, I just want to point out that there are couple more choices in addition to use Metal C malloc. You can explore using the far pointers to address data in data spaces. You can also use MVS services directly to have full control over how and where you want to allocated your storage to avoid the need to tie down R12 when you use __cinit/__cterm.

In terms of the data set up for __cinit, unless you want to specify subpool, I think you can set all fields to 0. You may want to override the default initial heap size and increment size to tune malloc performance.

Hope you have fun with this. If you have further questions you are welcome to contact me directly using my email address which you can find in my profile.

Hello Raym,

we want to use Metal C to create a 31-bit C routine that will be called from a 31-bit Z/OS PL/1 program in a Z/OS Batch JOB using JCL.

using an Metal C environment handle, we want to call the C routine in the following entry points:

Create a Metal C environment, returning the handle( using the __cinit function

passing the handle, allocate 64-bit very large buffer(using the A-mode switching feature provided from Z/OS v& rel 10 onwards, returning to the PL/1 program a 8 byte value containing the allocated pointer

-passing the handle and the 8 byte value containing the pointer and the address of a 31 bit adress of Buffer in the PL/1 program + its length,
a function to copy that storage into the gotten 64-bit buffer
-likewise a function to retrieve storage from the 64-bit buffer based on a key

finally a function to release the Metal C environment, freeing the 64-bit very large buffer

Looked at the Metal C doc a few things are unclear to me:
-A-Mode switching sample build + parms is under uss, I assume equivalent JCL can build a Load module under a PDSE, linking the PL/1 and Metal C routines together

what needs to be coded in the _cinit and __cterm routines.

Looking for an expert able to help out

It is working now!

In trying to narrow things down, I created a brand new project containing only the one handler and the one service and then deployed it to a brand new web project. The service worked just fine!

Did some backtracking and it looks like I may have caused my problem by importing a project created with RBD when I took the online EGL class.

All is well now. Thanks for the pointers!
Hi Richard,

The error you are getting means there is no service at the server defined in the URL, but you said that the service responds in the IDE. So either the service is not deployed or the URL is not pointing to the actual service. There isn't much information about your project so I'm going to point you in a few directions.

You say "My EGL service" so my assumption is you wrote the service. That URL is a little suspicious for EGL CE. The port 9080 is a port used by Websphere and CE doesn't support Websphere. Tomcat's default port is 8080.

I need some specific information about your project.

What is the correct port for your server?

Let's see if you went through the steps to deploy the service.
In the project that contains the service is there a deployment descriptor entry that defines the service as a SOAP service?
Is you service in the same project as your Rich UI handler?
If the service is in a different project did you deploy the project with the service?

If you did deploy the service.
I'm wondering how you defined the URL that's being used to invoke the service.
You can set the URL on the service client bindings tab of the EGL deployment descriptor -> URI, but the more common method to get the URL is to leave the URI blank, then the URL will come from the wsdl file.
If you left the URI blank: When doing client development I always take wsdl file from the: deployed service project/WebContent/WEB-INF/wsdl because this is created while the service is being deployed, because this file gets populated based on the target server. This means you have to write and deploy your service before you start the client development. If you want to work with an undeployed service you can create the wsdl from the service by using the wizard "Generate WSDL File", but you will need to set server port in Preferences -> EGL -> Service -> WSDL Generation port.

I hope this helps. If you are still experiencing problems, please provide the answers to the questions that pertain to your projects and I will attempt to provide more detailed debugging information.

regards,
Hey Richard - how is your service declared in your RUI handler? Are you using the @bindService annotation? In general, if you are deploying the RUI and service together to the same Web project, you should declare it like this in the RUI:

myService LoginService { };

instead of:

myService LoginService { @bindService };

Theresa,

Thanks for a great explanation of the deployment process! I've been experimenting with it and it works great.

I have run into a problem when deploying a project that uses services. The RichUI handler works fine when I test it in the Preview tab. My EGL service program is called and returns the expected values. However, if I deploy the project and try to run the handler on the server, I get the following exception when calling the service.

An exception has occurred: EGL1621E An error occurred while trying to invoke function:loginService on WebService:http://localhost:9080/EGLWeb/services/RUIServices. EGL0001I The error occurred in EGL Rich UI Proxy.
Detail1: 500
Detail2: FAILED
Detail3: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

Is there some step I'm missing? Is there some additional configuration to do for services?

Thanks in advance!
Chris,

While fooling around with the com.ibm.egl.rui.samples.ce > gallery.datadisplay > DataDisplayDemo.egl I noticed the Amount column wouldn’t sort correctly with the numbers I substituted.

The SortFunction in GridSorter.egl may need to identify the column's data type. In this case the Amount column’s data type is Int, but it is being processed as String . In the code below sortByName value is the column name, Amount.

Kevin

GridSorter.egl . . .

function SortFunction(a any in, b any in) returns (int)
	result int;
    if(a[sortByName] as String < b[sortByName] as String)
		result = 1;
	else
		result = -1;
	end

	if (sortingUp)
		result = -result;
	end
	return (result);
end

Hi Aaron. Great to see you here!

I'll see if I can answer your questions...

#1: Let me refer you to some other blog entries. If these don't answer your question completely let me know and we'll chat.

This one from Chris Laffra (IBM genius behind Rich UI) explains the proxy layer:
http://www-949.ibm.com/software/rational/cafe/blogs/egl-rich-web/2009/09/10/web-security-and-why-egl-rich-ui-needs-an-ajax-proxy

These entries from Joe Pluta talk about using RPG on the server side with EGL Rich UI on the client side:
http://www-949.ibm.com/software/rational/cafe/blogs/egl-i/2009/09/09/see-what-i-can-do-v2r1-update

http://www-949.ibm.com/software/rational/cafe/blogs/egl-i/2009/09/13/see-what-i-can-do-v2r1-complete

Although it is easiest to use EGL on the server side I've used PHP there too (with a Rich UI client)
and this entry from Chris Laffra talks about how to do that (including great detail about security concerns):
http://www-949.ibm.com/software/rational/cafe/blogs/egl-ce/2009/09/26/how-to-properly-waste-your-time-using-egl

#2: Deployment has changed (for the better) in EGL CE (vs. RBD) but right now all of my clients are still using RBD for production application development. So my experience with developing and deploying business applications is still mainly RBD experience (although I am coming up to speed on the EGL CE changes). Anyway, at least with RBD, we employ separate client and server/service projects such that we can make UI changes and deploy them independent of service changes and vice versa. This way we don't always have to deploy everything (client and server) if only one side has changed. From my experience with EGL CE so far the major difference is that I am able to develop both client and server as one workspace project but still deploy client and server independently if desired. Also, there is much greater flexibility in EGL CE for fine-tuning UI deployment.

(On a side note, we always use Subversion on IBM i as a team code repository for EGL projects.)

#3: Not sure. Perhaps one of the IBM'ers can answer this one definitively. In RBD I've debugged EGL client and server code deployed to test server instances in the IDE (Tomcat and WebSphere). In EGL CE, so far, I've only had occasion to debug the way I showed in the video -- with the built-in, no-deployment-required server support.

Hope this helps.
Hi Al (albartell),

For point 2, you could consider using one single handler that contains all screens and that is deployed as a whole. If you want to manage components more standalone, you could take a look at the blog entry I wrote on the topic: http://www-949.ibm.com/software/rational/cafe/blogs/egl-ce/2009/09/24/developing-a-portal-using-egl-rich-ui-bending-the-laws-of-physics.

That was a solid presentation Dan. Couple comments:

1) When you develop an "EGL Service", how is that invoked from the EGL UI layer? Is it XML web services or does it recognize that both layers are EGL based and use a more streamlined communication method?

2) Being it seems you have done your fair share of EGL development, and have possibly reached a point of maintaining an EGL vs. building new; what are the steps for deploying a screen and service code change within an application? Do you re-deploy the entire application?

3) Does EGL have capabilities to do step-through-debugging on the server? The reason I ask is sometimes you just can't duplicate an issue on the client. I am wondering if there is an equivalent STRSRVJOB type deal in EGL.

I must say that EGL seems to have a very clean syntax. I am glad to see IBM has created a free community edition. The final step to make EGL a viable language, in my book, is to make the EGL language/syntax open spec with a standards group (i.e. similar to JSF).
